SUMMARY:AANHPI Affinity Workshop: Story Mapping through Collage: Ways of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Members of the AANHPI (Asian American and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islander) community are invited to gather at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover to reflect on and be inspired by our own lives in relation to places\, real or imagined. Our time together will include an introduction to the exhibition Tommy Kha: Other Things Uttered with museum educator Christine Jee and a facilitated session on creating story maps to explore narrative ways of being and belonging\, led by artist and cultural organizer Mindy Tsonas Choi. Participants are invited to bring their own favorite collage materials and ephemera (photos\, stickers\, papers etc.) All other materials and light refreshments will be provided. This workshop is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. Open to adults as well as participants in middle school and up.

SUMMARY:Tour: Playing to Our Strengths: Highlights from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join curatorial fellow Ricardo Mercado to explore highlights from the Addison’s permanent collection in two sections: the “ideal” and the “real.” The “ideal\,” bringing together American Impressionist paintings with Pictorialist photography\, and the “real\,” featuring works by the Ashcan School and social realist photographs. Together\, these works reveal how American artists of the era grappled with questions of beauty\, truth\, and the rapidly transforming character of modern life. This is the second exhibition in a series exploring particular strengths of the Addison’s renowned collection of art of the United States from the 17th century to the present day. This program is presented in partnership with Andover’s Memorial Hall Library.

DESCRIPTION:Join assistant curator Rachel Vogel on Zoom to explore the work of contemporary photographer Tommy Kha\, the second recipient of the Addison’s Bartlett H. Hayes\, Jr. Prize. Kha examines how we construct belonging and otherness through photography\, inventing new models for self-portraiture with a critical eye toward the medium’s long history of absences and erasure. Other Things Uttered\, his first museum solo exhibition\, introduces viewers to the distinctive vocabulary and grammar of his photographic practice.
