SUMMARY:Annual Reenactment of the Lexington Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 1773\, three days before the Boston Tea Party\, the Lexington Town Meeting concluded a multi-day debate with a resolution to stop purchasing or drinking imported British tea. The crowd spilled out onto the common behind the meeting house and made a bonfire\, throwing the entire town’s supply of tea into it. \nEach year\, we reenact this occasion with a day of tea history! Join us for fun\, interactive activities to learn more about why tea was so important to the Revolution. Meet with the Lexington residents of 1773 to hear their side of the story\, find out where tea comes from\, and end the day by gathering around the fire and burning the tea! \n12:00 – 3:00 PM: Drop-in activities upstairs at Buckman Tavern\n12:30 PM: The Lexington Minute Men practice military drill to ready themselves for the coming conflict\n1:00 PM: The 18th century townspeople of Lexington (led by local Boy Scouts) begin to build a fire to destroy the detested tea\n1:30 PM: William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps rallies the crowd with patriotic music\n1:45 PM: THE BURNING OF THE TEA\n2:00 PM: Program conclusion with music from William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps and a musket salute from the Lexington Minute Men \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Lexington Minute Men\, the Chinese-American Association of Lexington\, Boy Scout Troop 160\, and Mark T. Wendell Tea Company.

DESCRIPTION:Come along on a ghostly outdoor adventure! The spirits of the Old Burying Ground are eager to bring Lexington’s past back to life and share with you the tales of what brought them to the grave on this special candlelight tour. As you walk along the winding paths of Lexington’s oldest graveyard\, hear from John Parker\, leader of the Lexington militia on the fateful first day of the American Revolution\, Sarah Childs\, who lost six children during an epidemic in 1778\, and more! For ages 5 and up; some walking required. Tours cover half a mile and last approximately 45 minutes. \nTours will depart every five minutes from Buckman Tavern between 6:30 and 7:15 PM. \nMore information coming soon!

SUMMARY:Sounds of Labor in Lowell: Agriculture and Early Industry
DESCRIPTION:What does the history of work in Lowell sound like\, and how can you tell that story through music? Come be part of the musical composition process in the first of a series of workshops on the soundscape of Lowell through its many eras! Join contemporary composers working on new pieces specifically for Lowell National Historical Park as they explore the labor of the Agriculture and Early Industry eras. Attend a ranger-led talk\, attempt hands-on activities\, and have a chance to discuss the compositions in progress. No musical knowledge necessary! \nParticipants can plan to meet at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street). A guided tour will walk to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum (115 John Street) and attendees can expect about half a mile of walking. \nLowell National Historical Park visitors may park at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District parking garage at 350 Dutton St.\, Lowell. SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress “Exploring Democracy – Our Rights and Our Responsibilities”
DESCRIPTION:In October 1774\, the political conflict between Great Britain and Massachusetts reached a crisis. Parliament enacted the “Intolerable Acts” to punish the province for the Tea Party\, and they revoked the charter of 1691 by which the popularly elected House of Representatives joined with the Council and Crown-appointed Governor to rule the Bay Colony. In the ensuing furor\, county conventions protested the changes; crowds closed courts\, Patriots took over county militias\, and encouraged towns to resist the new regime of the General Court. Royal Governor Thomas Gage called the Court to meet in Salem\, but the Assembly never convened. \nAlthough Gage canceled the session\, the representatives decided to meet behind closed and locked doors and reorganize as the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Its first session opened a week later\, on October 11th\, in Concord\, safe from the control of British authorities. The gathering was a landmark in the history of self-government. The Congress set the colony on a collision course with Britain and an eventual road to independence. Even as it proclaimed loyalty to the Crown\, the Congress mobilized the province in a struggle to reclaim the rights and liberties Massachusetts had enjoyed. Without declaring independence\, the popularly elected body seized the reins of power\, charted a new future for Massachusetts\, and set a model of self-government. \nOctober 11\, 2024\, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. To commemorate this occasion and honor our forebearers\, the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust is sponsoring a gathering in Concord’s First Parish Meetinghouse and the Wright Tavern next door\, where the delegates to the Congress met. This will be a day-long\, engaging program. With noted historians to guide us\, we will return to this crucial moment in the history of the American Revolution and ask what we can learn from the past. With state legislators joining us\, we will examine the state of democratic governance in Massachusetts and the United States today. And\, with students and teachers from Massachusetts schools\, we will collaboratively explore the future of democracy. Come join us for this remarkable day.

SUMMARY:Hosmer Open House featuring a cannon from Bunker Hill!
DESCRIPTION:The Acton Historical Society will host a visit of a British cannon.\nThis cannon was cast between 1760 and 1770. It was acquired by a local militia company in May of 1775. The ship on which it was located became mired in the mud at Chelsea Creek. This cannon and 3 others taken from the ship were later used by American forces to fight off the British at Bunker Hill. \nCome and see this “survivor” and learn about its discovery to restoration!

SUMMARY:Stone Walls of New England with Kevin Gardner
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Gardner is a lifelong resident of Hopkinton\, NH. Like a lot of independent rural Yankees\, he’s been a jack of many trades\, a builder\, logger\, writer\, teacher\, radio voice\, even an actor and director. \nFor more than forty years he has been a stone wall builder in a family business widely known for traditional New England stonework\, particularly for historic restoration of antique structures. In 2001 Kevin published The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls. His second book\, Stone Building: How To Make New England Style Walls and Other Structures the Old Way\, was published in May of 2017. He has also published poetry\, songs\, and essays\, including “Land of Stone”\, an examination of several historic sites in the Monadnock Region\, in the 2006 anthology Where The Mountain Stands Alone. \nFrom 1985 to 2010\, Kevin was also an award-winning performance critic\, feature writer\, and producer for NH Public Radio. His pieces on arts\, history and culture have aired on National Public Radio and the Christian Science Monitor broadcast network. In 2004\, Kevin was a co-host of the nationally syndicated radio series Storylines New England\, an interview and call-in program about our regional literature. He has written and produced other special programming for NHPR as well\, including a 45-minute radio drama adapted by NH poet Julia Older from her own long poem\, Tales of the Francois Vase. \nKevin is also a longtime professional actor\, director\, and teacher of theatre. He has taught at the New Hampton School\, the NH Institute of Art\, and at St. Paul’s School. Since 1999 he has been the Master Teacher of the course Shakespeare for Performance in St. Paul’s summer Advanced Studies Program. He is also a regular Guest Director at Plymouth State University\, a former performance evaluator for the NH State Council on the Arts\, and a frequent adjudicator of local\, regional\, and national theatre festivals. DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 2024\, the Concord Museum will commence its highly anticipated fall forum series with a special discussion featuring Mary Beth Norton\, renowned historian and award winning author of the landmark text 1774: The Long Year of Revolution. This exciting event marks the beginning of a series of programs hosted by the Concord Museum leading up to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. \nNorton will explore the pivotal period leading up to the American Revolution and the dramatic events that occurred between December 1773 through April 1775\, including the Boston Tea Party and the Battles of Lexington and Concord. \nIn 1774: The Long Year of the Revolution\, Mary Beth Norton chronicles the 16 months\, during which colonists loyal to King George III began discordant “discussions” that led to their acceptance of the inevitability of war. Norton will be joined in conversation by the Society of Colonial Wars of Massachusetts to discuss this transformative era and its impact on American history\, highlighting its significance in leadup to the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Sunday Stroll Walking Tour: Lexington Celebrates!
DESCRIPTION:Parades\, pageants and pandemonium have defined the many commemorations of the 1775 Battle of Lexington and the first shots of the War for Independence. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. The tour is 1 hour long and covers about a 1/2 mile on flat ground. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Wonderland Ball
DESCRIPTION:The Wonderland Ball will be a whimsical evening of historical dancing. Elegant attire inspired by Alice in Wonderland\, historical dress\, and historical “fancy dress” are encouraged. Light refreshments will be served. No partner is required and beginners are welcome! The event will be held in the stately and historic Andover Old Town Hall\, which is perfectly situated for a pre-ball dinner at one of Andover’s many excellent restaurants. Public parking is available throughout the town center. The Andover Commuter Rail Station is within walking distance of Old Town Hall. \nDancing will include a mix of contra dances\, quadrilles\, and round dances (often called “couple dances”). Contra dances and quadrilles are done by many couples together arranged in long lines\, squares\, or circles around the ballroom and do not require any special footwork – just walking! These dances will be taught throughout the ball\, and will be the majority of the program. We will also teach a selection of the evening’s dances at the afternoon workshop for those who want to give them a try. All dancing will be done to recorded music\, so you will be able to practice to the songs you’ll dance to in the evening. \nThis event is presented by The Footwork and Frolick Society\, a non-profit educational organization focused on 18th and 19th century dancing and amusements of all kinds. SUMMARY:Lowell Walks: Portuguese in Lowell
DESCRIPTION:Join researchers and archivists from the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Portuguese American Digital Archive\, Nikki Tantum\, Gray Fitzsimons\, and Nicole Catarino on a walk around the Back Central neighborhood. In the late 1800s\, increasing demands for cotton cloth production provided jobs and opportunity for the first Portuguese immigrants arriving in Lowell. In the decades that followed more Portuguese immigrants moved to the city and wove their lives and cultures into the neighborhood of Back Central\, creating a new community that still exists today. \nThis walk will highlight these stories just as the photography exhibit “The Portuguese in Lowell: The Familiar and the New” does\, but through a different lens. This exhibit highlighting photographs captured by Pedro Letria is on display at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum through February 2025. \nJoin us for this upcoming Lowell Walks event\, a guided walking tour. Tours are about 90 minutes\, are free\, and include a moderate amount of walking. No reservations are necessary\, and tours are conducted rain or shine. \nFree parking is available where the tour meets: Portuguese American Civic League of Lowell\, 512 Central Street.
