SUMMARY:Sun Sign Restoration Lighting Event
DESCRIPTION:The City of Lowell and the Lowell Historic Board are proud to announce the Sun Sign Restoration Lighting\, taking place on Monday\, October 27\, at 6:30PM in front of the Lowell Memorial Auditorium\, 50 East Merrimack St. \nLocated atop the historic Sun Building in Kearney Square\, the twin rooftop signs have long been a familiar feature of Lowell’s skyline. Installed in 1934\, twenty years after the building’s construction\, the signs once served as a beacon for generations of residents and travelers. The February 1\, 1937\, edition of The Lowell Sun proclaimed that the rooftop displays “contain the largest neon letters in Middlesex County\,” while a 1939 article described scouts using the illuminated signs as a navigational landmark. The October 27 relighting ceremony will feature remarks from Mayor Daniel P. Rourke\, City Manager Thomas A. Golden\, Jr.\, Lowell Historic Board Chair George Villaras\, and Alex Costello\, former Lowell Sun Editorial Page Editor

SUMMARY:Book Chat on The Men Who Lost America by Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy
DESCRIPTION:Stereotypes about the British military during the American Revolution are countless\, and often contradictory. Did England possess the most professional fighting force in the world\, or did they bumble through New England\, clinging tightly to outdated tactics while shrewd farmers rewrote the rules around them? Historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy untangles this web by following several prominent British leaders\, including George III himself\, to reveal the real competence\, as well as the human folly\, of the Crown and its representatives. Join us for a lively discussion\, lead by British military reenactor and historian Paul O’Shaughnessy\, on The Men Who Lost America. \nReading Into History: Book Chats is a series of informal discussions of historical topics inspired by nonfiction history books\, and led by authors\, historians\, and local history enthusiasts. All are welcome; reading the book is not required\, but will enhance the experience! \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:"In The Footsteps of the American Revolutionary War" Artist Talk with Steven Edson
DESCRIPTION:The 250th anniversary of the American Revolution has prompted locals to revisit and reconsider our town landmarks. Bare fields and unassuming streetcorners hold stories that only the most ardent history lovers remember\, some marked with worn signs and others nearly lost to time. Others teem with tour guides and attract visitors from near and far. Steven Edson’s photography of these modern Revolutionary locations\, currently on display at Munroe Tavern urges the public to reconsider the spaces they drive by and inhabit every day. Join the artist for a discussion of this project\, our relationship with the historical landscape around us\, and further images from this collection. \nDoors will open at 6:30 for exhibit viewing and artist meet and greet. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers \nAbout the Artist: \nSteven Edson started photographing in the early 1970s\, shooting primarily black and white documentary street photography. After graduating with a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, he became a successful and award-winning freelance photographer working on project-based client international projects in editorial\, education\, corporate design\, and advertising campaigns. He currently shows his fine art images in solo and national group shows and sells his images to both corporate collections and personal collectors.

SUMMARY:My Dream is of an Island-Place: The Great Brewster Journal LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Time travel to 1891 on Sept. 6-7 with a free multimedia presentation that uses original music\, text\, historical context\, images\, and short presentations to tell the story of four adventurous Lowell women who spent two weeks on a remote Boston Harbor island and kept a journal of their experiences. The immersive event will introduce the “Merrie Trippers\,” and explore the social and literary world they inhabited. A live performance of newly commissioned music by Massachusetts composer Adam Jacob Simon highlights the work of Lowell poet Lucy Larcom; video projections bring the island sojourn into greater focus; and the women’s own art and photographs shine out of this fascinating document. Meet Stephanie Schorow\, lead author of A Boston Harbor Islands Adventure: The Great Brewster Journal of 1891\, literature scholar Anna Brecke\, and producer/singer Emily Marvosh in this free event in the newly renovated Donahue Family Academic Arts Center\, housed in a historic downtown train depot. SUMMARY:Weaving An Address - Curator Tour and Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a free program exploring The Umbrella Arts Center’s outdoors public art ramble\, Weaving an Address\, a site-specific exhibition of work by prominent Black artists commemorating colonial-era Black residents of Concord’s famed Walden Woods. \nOn Saturday\, July 19 at 3PM\, curator and artist Marla McLeod will lead a guided tour of the artwork installed at Brister’s Hill in Walden Woods\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved before Thoreau. \nThe tour will be followed at 4:30PM by refreshments and a panel discussion back at The Umbrella Arts Center (40 Stow Street\, Concord\, MA) with McLeod in dialogue with historian Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts\, who was recently a subject of the new international documentary\, Concord’s Secret History\, just released on over 500 PBS stations. Saturday’s discussion will examine the “journey from archive to art\,” and Lemire’s scholarly research that fueled Weaving’s creative installations. \nPart of the town’s Revolution250 celebrations\, this program is co-presented by The Umbrella Arts Center\, The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House: Concord’s African American History Museum. It featured work by artists Sharon Chandler Correnty\, Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \nLearn more at https://theumbrellaarts.org/weaving

SUMMARY:Trumpeters of Sedition: How the Printing Press created a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Gary Gregory\, proprietor of the Printing Office of Edes & Gill\, will talk about the role of the printing press in the American Revolution. Printed pamphlets\, broadsides\, and newspapers energized the revolution\, and it was the printing press that produced the Declaration of Independence. Gary will use his replica of an English Common Press\, a wooden hand-press that now resides at the Museum of Printing\, to demonstrate the technology in use at the time of the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

SUMMARY:Pride Month Lecture: Longfellow Legacies
DESCRIPTION:When most people—especially in Lexington—hear the name Henry Wadsworth Longfellow today\, they probably think of his 1860 poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride.” But what about the man behind the famous verses? In his personal life\, Longfellow was surrounded by people we would today consider members of the LGBTQ+ community\, including friends\, siblings\, children\, and grandchildren. For this special Pride Month presentation\, public historian Meaghan Michel will explore LGBTQ+ history through three generations of the Longfellow family. Join us and learn how queer people in the 19th and early 20th centuries faced hardships\, found love and acceptance\, and made their mark on history. \nMeaghan Michel is an independent historian with a B.A. in Public History from Suffolk University\, and a decade of experience as a ranger at the National Parks of Boston\, including four years at Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic site. She is currently a guide with HubTown Tours and a volunteer at The History Project. \nThis event brought to you in partnership with LexPride! \n$10 Lexington History Museums members\, $15 nonmembers \nEventBrite registrants are automatically enrolled in the Lexington History Museums weekly newsletter.

SUMMARY:Book Chat on Friends Divided with author Gordon S. Wood
DESCRIPTION:One of the most iconic duos in Revolutionary history\, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson famously worked together through the Continental Congress before feuding for decades. Later\, they miraculously rekindled a fierce friendship before dying on the same day\, 50 years to the day of the Declaration of Independence’s signing. Their relationship allows us a unique look at how the American Revolution affected those of different social classes and ideologies\, and how such disparate ideas were able to exist side by side in the new Republic. \nIn our last Book Chat of this season\, join award-winning Revolutionary War historian Gordon S. Wood in an interactive discussion about these fascinating founding fathers. \nInterested in further Book Chats? We will also be discussing picks for next year – all are welcome to bring ideas on interesting Revolutionary books to read! \nThe last book chat of each series is always FREE\, but registration is required!
